A 3D print should not be priced from filament cost alone.
A part can use only a small amount of plastic while occupying a printer for hours, creating machine wear and requiring setup, cleanup, inspection and packaging.

Quick answer: how do you calculate a 3D printing price?
Build unit cost from:
- filament;
- electricity;
- printer recovery;
- maintenance and consumables;
- expected failed-print cost;
- hands-on labor;
- packaging and other direct cost;
- overhead;
- selling and payment fees;
- target gross margin.
A useful model is:
Production attempt cost = material + electricity + printer recovery + maintenance + consumables
Then:
Expected production cost per successful unit = production attempt cost ÷ expected success rate
Add labor, packaging and overhead to get fixed unit cost.
If revenue-based fees are f and target margin is m:
Recommended price = fixed unit cost ÷ (1 - f - m)
Filament cost from slicer grams
If a slicer estimates G grams and filament costs K per kilogram:
Material cost = (G ÷ 1000) × K
For 118 g of PETG at €27.50/kg, material cost is about €3.25.
That number is useful, but it is not the full production cost.
Electricity cost
If average printer draw is W watts, print duration is H hours and electricity costs E per kWh:
Electricity cost = (W ÷ 1000) × H × E
Use a measured or reasonable average draw rather than the printer power supply’s maximum rating.
Recover the printer as a productive asset
A simple internal recovery model is:
Printer recovery per print-hour = printer + setup cost ÷ productive recovery hours
Then:
Printer recovery for the job = hourly recovery × print hours
This is a pricing-management assumption, not tax depreciation advice. Its purpose is to make each paid job contribute toward replacing productive equipment.
Keep maintenance visible
Nozzles, beds, belts, bearings, fans and other wear do not occur on every print, but they belong in production economics.
A simple model is:
Maintenance allocation = maintenance reserve per print-hour × print time
Refine the reserve later from actual maintenance records.
Account for expected failed prints
Failure risk is one of the biggest differences between a hobby estimate and a production quote.
If a production attempt costs €8 and expected success rate is 90%:
€8 ÷ 0.90 = €8.89 expected production cost per successful unit
The difference is the expected cost of occasional failed attempts spread across successful units.
If failed-print allowance is r:
Success rate = 1 - r
and:
Failure-adjusted production cost = attempt cost ÷ (1 - r)
Use your actual history when you have enough data rather than keeping a permanent guess.
Separate printer time from human time
An eight-hour print does not necessarily require eight hours of operator labor.
Hands-on work may include:
- slicing and file preparation;
- build-plate preparation;
- material changes;
- removal and support cleanup;
- inspection;
- assembly;
- packaging.
If hands-on work takes M minutes and loaded labor cost is L per hour:
Labor cost = (M ÷ 60) × L
This avoids both overcharging every print-hour as labor and pretending operator time is free.
Packaging, hardware and other direct cost
Add job-specific items such as packaging, labels, threaded inserts, magnets, screws, bearings, adhesive or outsourced finishing as direct unit cost.
Keeping these separate from general overhead makes the quote easier to audit.
Margin is different from markup
If a unit costs €12 and you add a 40% markup, the price is €16.80.
The margin is not 40%:
(€16.80 - €12) ÷ €16.80 ≈ 28.6%

Selling fees belong in the price equation
Marketplace and payment-processing fees are usually tied to revenue.
If fixed unit cost is C, combined revenue-based fees are f, and target margin is m:
Price = C ÷ (1 - f - m)
This lets the target margin survive after the entered fees are deducted.
Worked example: PETG camera bracket
Try this sample in the calculator:
- 118 g PETG;
- €27.50/kg filament;
- 8.2 print hours;
- 125 W average draw;
- €0.28/kWh electricity;
- €1,250 printer/setup cost recovered over 6,000 productive print-hours;
- €0.15 maintenance reserve per print-hour;
- 10% expected failure allowance;
- 16 minutes hands-on labor at €24/hour;
- €0.90 packaging;
- €2 overhead allocation;
- 2.9% payment fee;
- 48% target margin.
The point of the example is the cost structure: filament is only one line.
Batch pricing
For a batch, some costs scale almost directly with quantity while some labor becomes more efficient.
The calculator uses a per-unit labor input and multiplies the finished quote by batch quantity. If your real workflow reduces labor per unit at larger quantities, reduce that input only when the process supports it.

Should I charge by gram or by hour?
Neither is complete alone. Grams represent material consumption; hours represent machine occupancy. A robust quote uses both plus labor, failure risk and overhead.
How much should I charge for printer time?
There is no universal number. A transparent starting point is printer/setup investment divided by the productive print-hours over which you want to recover it, with maintenance modeled separately.
Should failed prints be a separate customer fee?
An expected-cost model normally spreads a reasonable failure allowance into normal production pricing instead of surprising a customer after a failed attempt.
Does VAT or sales tax count as margin?
The calculator keeps the pre-tax price separate from an optional tax percentage added on top so collected tax is not confused with operating contribution.
