3x3 Basketball Rules: What Actually Changes When a Basket Is Worth One Point

The first time you watch 3x3, it looks like half-court pickup with a referee. Then a team hits what your eyes call a three, the scoreboard moves by two, and you realise you are watching a different sport wearing the same shoes.
3x3 became an Olympic event in Tokyo, and it has been growing in schools and clubs ever since — partly because it needs one basket and four players instead of a full gym and a squad of twelve. But the rules are not 5x5 with fewer bodies. A handful of them change the arithmetic of the whole game, and one of them changes it so completely that most stats software gets it wrong.
Here is what actually differs, and what each change does to the way the game is played.
Scoring: one and two, not two and three
A basket from inside the arc is worth one point. A basket from beyond the 6.75 m arc is worth two. Every free throw is worth one.
That is the rule that matters most, and it is the one people skim past. Read it again with a coach’s eyes: a shot from the arc is worth exactly double a shot from inside it. In 5x5 a three is worth 1.5× a two. In 3x3 it is 2×.
That difference sounds academic until you do the arithmetic. In 5x5, a 36% three-point shooter and a 54% mid-range shooter produce identical points per attempt. In 3x3, a shooter from the arc only needs to convert half as often as someone shooting inside to be equally valuable. A 30% shooter from the arc out-produces a 55% shooter from inside, on every single attempt.
Which is why good 3x3 teams look, to a 5x5 eye, like they are taking bad shots. They are not. They are taking the shots the rulebook overpaid for.
The game ends at 21 — or at ten minutes
A 3x3 game is one ten-minute period of stopped clock. But there is a second, faster ending: the first team to reach 21 points wins immediately, whatever the clock says.
Most games end on the clock rather than at 21. But the target changes how the last two minutes are played, because a team down by six with ninety seconds left is in a genuinely different position from a team down by six that also has to worry about the other side reaching 21 first.
There is no half-time. There is no quarter break. There is one running block of basketball, which is why teams carry four players rather than twelve.
Twelve seconds to shoot
The shot clock is 12 seconds. Half of the 5x5 24.
This is what makes the game feel breathless. A possession that would be a patient set play in 5x5 is, in 3x3, roughly two passes and a decision. Teams that try to run structure lose to teams that have three players who can create in a two-count.
One reset rule is worth memorising because it is the opposite of the 5x5 convention: an offensive rebound resets the shot clock to a full 12 seconds. In 5x5, an offensive board gives you 14. In 3x3 you get the whole thing back. That makes crashing the offensive glass considerably more valuable than the 5x5 instinct suggests, and it is the single most common thing coaches coming across from the full-court game get wrong.
Nobody fouls out
This one surprises people. In FIBA 3x3, a player is not disqualified for accumulating personal fouls. Unsportsmanlike and disqualifying fouls are handled separately, but a player can commit six ordinary fouls and stay on the floor.
With four players on a roster, the alternative would be unworkable. It also means that the “keep him out of foul trouble” management every 5x5 coach does by reflex simply does not exist here.
What replaces it is the team foul count.
Team fouls: two thresholds, not one

That second threshold is brutal, and it is the reason team fouls need watching in a way they do not in 5x5. Once a team reaches ten, every foul hands over two shots and the possession — a swing of roughly three points against a target of 21. Two careless fouls in the last minute can decide a game that was level.
It also means the count is worth tracking for both teams. Knowing the other side is one foul from the bonus is an attacking decision, not an accounting detail.
Overtime has no clock
If the score is level when the ten minutes run out, the game goes to overtime — and overtime has no clock at all. The first team to score two points wins.
Not the first team to lead by two. The first team to score a cumulative two points. A single basket from the arc ends it; two from inside ends it; one inside basket plus a free throw ends it. This holds whatever the tied score was, including 20–20.
That is about the shortest overtime format in team sport, and it means the first possession of overtime is very close to a coin toss with a basketball attached.
The court
15 m wide by 11 m deep — roughly 49 by 36 feet — with one basket. The arc sits at 6.75 m from the centre of the basket, with straight lines running 0.9 m from each sideline in the corners, exactly as on a FIBA 5x5 court.
Note what that means: the arc is at the same distance as a FIBA 5x5 three-point line. The shot is not shorter. It is just worth relatively more.
Substitutions and possession
Substitutions happen on any dead ball, from behind the endline, without the referee being involved. The incoming player simply makes contact with the outgoing one.
And after every made basket, the defending team takes the ball from under its own basket and must clear it behind the arc before attacking. There is no inbound from the sideline and no walking it up. This is the rule that keeps 3x3 moving at the pace it does.
The two-point summary
If you only remember two things:
- The arc is worth double, not one-and-a-half. Every efficiency judgement you carry over from 5x5 needs rebuilding on that scale.
- An offensive rebound gives you a full new possession clock. Crash the glass harder than your 5x5 instincts want you to.
Where the rules trip up the software
Here is the practical problem with tracking a 3x3 game: almost every stat app on the market is a 5x5 app. Change the scoring and everything downstream changes with it — points per game, shooting percentages, effective field goal percentage, true shooting, points per shot. All of those formulas assume a basket is worth two and a long one is worth three.
Feed 3x3 numbers into a 5x5 app and it will happily give you totals that are wrong by roughly half, and efficiency figures that are meaningless. A “good” points-per-shot figure in 5x5 is about 1.00. In 3x3 it is about 0.55. An app that does not know which game it is in will tell you your entire team is shooting badly.
The rules are simple. Getting the maths that sits on top of them right is the part that takes work.
