How to Plan Water Carry for a Dry Trail Stretch

A dry-stretch calculator should help with arithmetic, not pretend it knows exactly how much water every person should drink.
The Dry Stretch Water Carry Capacity Planner therefore asks for your own observed consumption rate and keeps that assumption visible.
It uses miles and fluid ounces by default, with a metric switch for kilometers and milliliters.
Start with expected moving time
The first calculation is simple:
moving time = dry-stretch distance ÷ expected moving speed
If a stretch is 12 miles and you expect to average 2.5 mph while moving, the arithmetic gives 4.8 moving hours.
That is not the same as total elapsed time. Breaks, navigation delays, elevation, terrain and unexpected stops can make the real crossing longer.
Use an observed rate you understand
The next input is your own consumption per hour from comparable outings.
The tool multiplies that rate by estimated moving time, then adds the reserve amount you enter.
It does not choose a medically “correct” hydration rate for you.
Separate three different numbers
A useful carry check keeps these separate:
- calculated volume from your entered rate;
- starting water you actually plan to leave with;
- container capacity you can physically carry.
A plan can fail in two different ways: you may intend to start with less than your arithmetic target, or your bottles/bladder may not have enough capacity even if you want to carry more.
Water weight matters
Water is heavy.
One liter weighs about one kilogram before the bottle itself. In US terms, roughly one quart of water weighs a little over two pounds.

Do not treat a source report as permanent
A report that a spring, tank or creek was flowing is only a report from a particular time.
Season, weather, maintenance, livestock use and access conditions can change quickly. The planner lets you record source confidence and the report date so an old note does not look identical to a current verified report.
A calculator cannot verify the route for you
Before relying on a water source, check current information from appropriate local land managers, trail organizations, recent field reports or other reliable sources for that route.
And if heat, illness, altitude or personal health conditions materially change your hydration needs, use appropriate medical or local expert guidance rather than a generic web calculator.
