How to Read a Basketball Shot Chart

There is a moment every coach knows. Your best shooter has gone 4-for-9 and the bench is buzzing that he’s on. Your gut says keep feeding him. The scorebook says 44%. Both of those things can be true and both can lead you off a cliff — because neither tells you the one thing that decides games: where those nine shots came from.

That is what a shot chart is for. Not decoration. Not a souvenir. It is the difference between knowing that a player scored and knowing how he is going to score next Saturday.

What a shot chart actually is

A shot chart is a map of the floor with every attempt marked where it was taken — makes one way, misses another. The format was popularised in 2012 by analyst Kirk Goldsberry, who took the NBA’s raw spatial data and turned it into something a human eye could read in two seconds. Before that, shooting was a number. After it, shooting was a shape.

The insight is almost embarrassingly simple. A basketball court is not uniform. A shot from six feet and a shot from eighteen feet both count as “a two”, but one of them goes in twice as often. Averaging them together throws away the only information that matters.

The zones, and what each one is really worth

Almost every shot chart splits the floor the same way, because these are the divisions where the odds actually change.

The restricted area — roughly the first four feet around the rim. The most efficient real estate in basketball. NBA shooters convert here around 65%. At youth level the number is lower, but the ranking is identical: nothing else is close.

The paint, outside the restricted area — floaters, short hooks, everything in the key that isn’t a layup. Efficiency drops off a shelf: you have left the easiest shot in the game and gained no extra reward for it.

Mid-range — left, centre, right. The long two. NBA shooters hit roughly 40–42%.

Corner three — the shortest three on the floor, because the arc sits closer to the baseline. Around 38–40%.

Above the break three — the top of the key and the wings. Around 35–37%.

Look at those five numbers and mid-range looks respectable. Better than either three. That is exactly the trap.

Points per shot: the number that reorders everything

Field goal percentage answers “how often does it go in.” It does not answer “what do I get when it does.” Points per shot — PPS — answers both at once: the make rate multiplied by what the shot is worth.

Read that twice, because it rearranges what your eyes told you. A 36% three-point shooter produces more offence than a 41% mid-range shooter. Not slightly more — roughly 30% more, every single attempt. The mid-range shooter looks better in the box score and is quietly costing you a basket every fourth possession.

This is the whole reason the professional game moved the way it did. Not fashion. Arithmetic. And the arithmetic is exactly as true in a school gym on a Tuesday night as it is in an NBA arena.

What a chart tells you that a box score never will

Where a shooter is actually a shooter. “38% from three” is one number hiding two players. Chart it and you often find 50% from the left corner and 20% from the top of the key — same kid, two completely different players. Now you know which side to run the flare screen on.

Where your offence leaks. If a third of your attempts come from the elbows, you have found the leak before it costs you a season. Not because those shots are bad in isolation, but because they are the cheapest shots on the floor and you are buying them in bulk.

Whether a slump is real. A player 3-for-15 across two games looks broken. Chart it and you may find fifteen good shots that simply did not fall — the same spots he made all month. A shot chart is the most reliable way to tell a shooting slump from a shot-selection slump, and those are two entirely different conversations to have with a fifteen-year-old.

Whether the gameplan survived contact. You drew up an offence to generate corner threes and rim attacks. Did it? The chart answers in one glance, without anyone relitigating the game from memory.

How to chart a game without missing the game

The honest problem with shot charts is that somebody has to mark them, and that somebody usually also wants to watch.

Chart one team, not two. Opponent data is nice. Your own data is what you can act on.

Do not chase perfect coordinates. Within a couple of feet is plenty — the zone is what matters. Nobody has ever changed a rotation because a dot was eighteen inches off.

Start with makes and misses only. Add the rest later, once marking shots has stopped requiring thought. A clean shot chart beats a half-finished box score every time.

Chart the second half if the first is chaos. Half a game of good data beats a full game of guesses.

Chart your own team, free

Print it or save it as a PDF and hand it to the player. A fifteen-year-old who sees his own map — the corner glowing, the elbow cold — will change his shot selection faster than any speech you can give him.

The part that isn’t arithmetic

Here is what the analytics posts leave out. The first time you chart your own team, the numbers are not the payoff. The payoff comes three weeks later, when a kid who never shot from the corner drifts there on his own, catches, and buries it — and you realise he did that because you showed him a piece of paper with his own dots on it.

Shot charts do not make players better. They make players legible — first to a coach, then, more importantly, to themselves. Everything after that is still down to the thousand shots they put up in an empty gym.
