What this tool does
The calculator reports CDC adult BMI category, waist-to-height ratio, a legacy tape-measure body-fat estimate, and estimated fat and lean mass. The classic circumference estimate is included for continuity and trend tracking, but it is not the current U.S. Navy BCA method and does not report military pass/fail status.
How to use it
- Choose metric or US customary units, then enter age, sex, height and weight.
- Enter waist and neck circumference using a consistent tape technique; the female legacy equation also requires hip circumference.
- Calculate and review BMI, waist-to-height ratio, body-fat estimate, estimated fat mass and estimated lean mass.
- Use repeated tape measurements mainly for consistent trend tracking because small placement differences can change the result.
- Save the result locally, print it to PDF, or export a standalone HTML copy when useful.
Important limitations
BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis, and this adult categorization is intended for ages 20+. Tape-measure body-fat estimates can vary with measurement placement, body shape and the underlying equation. This tool does not determine medical risk, military eligibility, or whether a particular body-fat level is appropriate for you.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this calculator say legacy circumference estimate instead of U.S. Navy body fat?
The older neck/waist/hip logarithmic equations are commonly associated with historical Navy-style tape calculations, but current Navy BCA guidance uses a different process. GentleTools labels the older estimate explicitly rather than presenting it as the current Navy standard.
What BMI categories are used?
For adults age 20 and older, the calculator uses CDC categories: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight from 18.5 to below 25, overweight from 25 to below 30, and obesity classes from 30 upward.
Does waist-to-height ratio get a pass or fail label?
No. The tool reports the ratio and percent of height without turning a threshold from a specific organization into a general medical rule.
Are my tape measurements saved automatically?
No. A successful calculation reuses only basic profile fields such as age, sex, height and weight. Tape measurements and calculated results are stored only when you explicitly choose Save result.
