Exercise Volume Calculator

Calculate the external-load volume for one exercise using the same shared GentleTools Fitness volume engine as the full Training Volume planner.

Enter one exercise you actually performed or want to calculate. No sample values are inserted.

Volume load is a simple external-load proxy: sets × reps × load. It is not a complete measure of training stress and should not be treated as directly equivalent across very different exercises.

What this tool does

This focused calculator multiplies working sets × reps per set × external load for one exercise. It also shows total reps and average external load per rep. The calculation is intentionally the same shared formula used by the multi-exercise Training Volume tool rather than a separate implementation.

How to use it

  1. Choose kilograms or pounds.
  2. Enter the exercise name if useful, then enter working sets, reps per set and external load.
  3. Calculate the exercise volume to see total reps and sets × reps × load.
  4. Save the result locally if you want to keep it on this device.
  5. Print or save to PDF, export CSV, or export a standalone HTML result.

Important limitations

Exercise volume load is a simple sets × reps × external-load proxy. It does not account for bodyweight contribution, range of motion, tempo, technique, proximity to failure, fatigue, recovery or whether a particular amount of volume is appropriate for you. Do not interpret a larger number as automatically better or safer.

Frequently asked questions

What formula does this calculator use?

Exercise volume = working sets × reps per set × external load. The tool uses the same shared calculation module as the GentleTools Training Volume & Progression Calculator.

Can I use pounds?

Yes. You can switch between kilograms and pounds. The shared engine normalizes the calculation internally so the visible unit can change without creating a second formula.

Why does this page calculate only one exercise?

It is a focused entry point for a single exercise. For a whole workout with multiple exercises and real saved-session comparisons, use the Training Volume & Progression Calculator.

Does it compare this exercise with my previous workout?

No. A single exercise is not automatically compared with an entire previous session because that would be misleading. Saved Exercise Volume results are kept separate from Training Volume session comparisons.

Is more exercise volume always better?

No. The result is a workload number, not a prescription. Training quality, effort, recovery, exercise selection and goals still matter.
