Training Volume & Progression Calculator

Add the exercises you actually performed, calculate sets × reps × load for the session, and compare the result with your last real saved session — without sample workouts or an account.

Start with one blank exercise. Add only the work you actually performed or want to compare.

Volume load is a simple external-load proxy: sets × reps × load. It is not a complete measure of training stress and should not be treated as directly equivalent across very different exercises.

What this tool does

The calculator totals external-load volume across multiple exercises, along with working sets, total reps and average external load per rep. If you have a previously saved Training Volume session on this device, it also shows transparent percentage changes in total volume, reps and sets.

How to use it

  1. Choose kilograms or pounds.
  2. Enter one or more exercises with sets, reps per set and the external load used. Exercise names are optional.
  3. Calculate the session to see per-exercise and total volume load.
  4. Save a real session locally if you want a later session to compare against it.
  5. Print or save to PDF, export a spreadsheet-friendly CSV, or export a standalone HTML copy.

Important limitations

Volume load is a simple sets × reps × external-load proxy. It does not capture range of motion, tempo, proximity to failure, technique, exercise difficulty, bodyweight contribution, fatigue or recovery. A higher number is not automatically a better workout, and totals from very different exercises or training styles should not be treated as perfectly equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

What is training volume load?

On this page it means sets × reps × external load. The session total is the sum of that calculation across all entered exercises.

Can I compare this workout with a previous one?

Yes. Save a real session locally, then calculate a later session. The tool compares total volume, total reps and working sets with the most recent saved Training Volume session.

Does more volume always mean better progress?

No. This is a workload calculation, not a recommendation that you should always increase the number. Exercise choice, effort, recovery and training goals still matter.

Can I use pounds?

Yes. Switch to pounds and the visible loads and result totals are converted while the shared stored calculation remains normalized internally.

Is my session uploaded?

No account is required. Saved sessions use the local GentleTools Fitness results store in this browser on this device.
