Backpacking Food Weight: Calories per Ounce and per 100 g Explained

Backpacking food weight is mostly a calorie-density problem.
Two foods can provide the same calories while weighing very different amounts. Over several days, that difference becomes pounds rather than ounces.

What is calorie density?
Calorie density is simply energy divided by food weight.
In US units:
calories per ounce = calories ÷ ounces
In metric:
calories per 100 g = calories ÷ grams × 100
A food with 180 calories in 1 oz has a much higher calorie density than a food with 180 calories in 3 oz.
That does not automatically make one food “better.” Taste, digestion, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sodium, texture and dietary requirements still matter. The number only makes the weight tradeoff visible.
Why water matters
Water adds weight without adding calories.
That is why dried foods, powders, oils, nut butters and many compact snacks often have higher calorie density than foods carrying a lot of water.
For backpacking, the important comparison is usually the food weight you must carry from the trailhead or resupply point — not the final cooked weight after adding water on trail.
How to compare two foods
Imagine two snacks:
- Food A: 250 calories at 2 oz;
- Food B: 250 calories at 3.5 oz.
Food A gives 125 calories/oz.
Food B gives about 71 calories/oz.
If you replace 500 daily calories of Food B with Food A, the weight difference becomes meaningful over a five- or seven-day carry.

Do not optimize only for calories per ounce
A food plan that looks impressive mathematically can still be a poor personal plan.
Your list may also need to account for:
- protein;
- carbohydrates;
- fat;
- foods you will actually want to eat;
- dietary restrictions;
- cooking method;
- packaging;
- food safety;
- allergies or medical requirements.
That is why the tool keeps calories, protein, carbs and fat beside the weight calculation instead of producing a single “best food” recommendation.
Packaging weight matters too
Five days of wrappers, pouches and containers can add more than expected.
The optimizer includes a packaging allowance so the total carried-food estimate is not based only on edible contents.
If you know the real packaging weight, you can adjust the allowance to match your system.
Use package labels instead of generic averages
The same food category can vary substantially between brands.
Use the values printed on the actual product you plan to carry:
- serving weight;
- calories;
- protein;
- carbohydrates;
- fat.
That produces a more useful plan than relying on a generic “trail mix” database value.
The best number is the total carry
The final question is not just “how many calories per ounce?”
It is:
