How Much Food Weight Per Day for Backpacking? Build Your Own Estimate

There is no single food-weight-per-day number that fits every backpacker.

A smaller person on a short moderate trip, a large hiker covering long days, and someone carrying low-calorie-density foods can all need very different starting weights.

A better estimate begins with two things you control:

  1. your own calorie target;
  2. the calorie density of the foods you actually plan to carry.

Why “2 pounds of food per day” is only a shortcut

Rules of thumb are useful for a quick sanity check, but they hide the biggest variable: what is inside the food bag.

Two plans can both contain 3,000 calories per day while one weighs dramatically more because it includes foods with more water or lower energy density.

That is why a planning tool should calculate from the list rather than force every trip into a fixed pounds-per-day assumption.

Start with your own calorie target

Use a target that makes sense for you and the trip you are planning.

Factors that may affect your own plan include:

  • body size;
  • trip duration;
  • daily mileage and elevation;
  • temperature;
  • whether this is a relaxed camping trip or sustained high-output travel;
  • your normal appetite on trail;
  • dietary or medical needs.

Then calculate the food list

For every food, enter:

  • serving weight;
  • calories per serving;
  • protein, carbs and fat if you want to track them;
  • servings per person per day.

The tool adds the food into one daily plan, multiplies it by people and days, and then adds your chosen packaging allowance.

Example: why the same calories can weigh less

Suppose one daily plan provides 3,000 calories at an average of 100 calories per ounce.

That is about:

30 oz/day = 1.88 lb/day

If the same 3,000 calories average 125 calories per ounce:

24 oz/day = 1.5 lb/day

Across six days, that difference is more than two pounds at the trailhead.

Metric users can run exactly the same comparison with calories per 100 g.

Do not chase the lightest theoretical menu

Weight is only one constraint.

A useful food bag also needs to be food you can and will eat.

Consider:

  • variety;
  • texture;
  • easy calories when appetite is low;
  • protein and carbohydrate goals you personally use;
  • cooking time and fuel;
  • allergies;
  • foods that survive the temperatures and duration involved;
  • packaging and trash volume.

The point of optimization is to reveal tradeoffs, not to reduce food to a single score.

Add packaging before calling the plan finished

A spreadsheet that totals only edible food is optimistic.

Wrappers, pouches, zip bags, containers and repackaging all count on your back.

Compare the first day to the last day

Your starting food weight is not your average carried food weight.

Every meal reduces the load.

For long carries, it can help to think about:

  • starting food weight;
  • average daily consumption;
  • food remaining at each resupply point;
  • whether you are deliberately carrying an extra day.
