SSI Redetermination Checklist: Documents to Gather Before the Review

An SSI redetermination is a review of non-medical eligibility factors. SSA’s current guidance says it reviews income, resources and living arrangements to determine whether you remain eligible and whether the payment amount is correct.

Documents SSA may ask for
SSA says the documents needed vary by case, but examples include:

Do not assume every item on a generic checklist is required for your review. Use the letter SSA sends you as the controlling request.
Start with the review letter
Record:
- notice date;
- appointment or response date;
- review method: mail, phone or in person;
- items specifically requested;
- contact information shown on the letter.
SSA’s 2026 guidance states that recipients generally have 30 days to respond to an appointment letter or mailed redetermination request, or to tell SSA they cannot keep the appointment or are having trouble completing the form.

Build three snapshots
Income
Record current wages and other income sources with effective dates.
Resources
Record accounts and other countable-resource information relevant to the review. Avoid putting complete account numbers into a browser tracker; use neutral labels such as “checking ending 42” if you need a reference.
Living arrangements
Record where you live, who contributes to housing costs and the household expenses relevant to the period SSA is reviewing.
These snapshots make it easier to compare what is true now with what was previously reported.
Add a change-report chronology
For each important change, record:
- what changed;
- effective date;
- date reported to SSA;
- reporting method;
- confirmation or evidence;
- whether SSA later reflected the change.
This is particularly useful when a redetermination uncovers a discrepancy that may lead to an underpayment or overpayment question.
Prepare a clean evidence index
A good redetermination file is not simply a folder of PDFs.
Group evidence by:
- income;
- bank/resource evidence;
- housing/living arrangement;
- insurance or other assets;
- correspondence;
- change reports.
