Short answer: how should a tennis-court cleaning business build a profitable price?
Start with the full job rather than copying a market price per court.
A useful financial model is:
Direct job cost = entered materials per court + fixed consumables + equipment allocation + paid labor + vehicle cost + other direct costs
Then add overhead.
If you also want a target gross margin and expect a percentage payment fee:
Safe service price = cost before card fee ÷ (1 − card-fee rate − target-margin rate)

1. One court and three courts do not have the same unit economics
A multi-court site can spread fixed travel and setup over more paid work.
That means three courts at one club should not automatically be modeled as three completely independent single-court visits.
The calculator separates per-court costs and service time from fixed setup, closeout and route time.

- two courts at an HOA,

The customer-facing price can still be simple. The operator model underneath it should reflect the actual site structure.
2. Enter material cost from your own verified court-specific process
The calculator includes an entered materials cost per court.
It does not recommend chemicals, pressures, equipment settings, resurfacing methods, line treatments or any other sports-surface procedure.
Different court systems can require different care.
Use only a cost assumption from a method you have independently verified as appropriate for the specific surface.
Financially:
Entered materials = number of courts × entered material cost per court
3. Fixed consumables and documentation should stay visible
Not every cost scales with court count.
The job may include a fixed allowance for documentation, disposable supplies or other visit-level consumables.
Keeping this separate helps explain why a single court may need a higher effective per-court rate than several courts at one site.
4. Allocate reusable equipment across paid work
Commercial equipment wears out and needs maintenance.
The calculator provides an equipment allocation per job.
This is not tax depreciation advice. It is an internal planning allowance that helps each paid job contribute toward maintaining and replacing the equipment used to produce the service.
5. Service time per court is an operator assumption
The calculator asks for service minutes per court.
That field is a financial production assumption based on your own verified work history, not a recommendation for how a court should be cleaned.
The model calculates:
Total service time = court count × entered service minutes per court
Then it adds setup, closeout and drive time.
This makes production variability visible in the price instead of burying it inside a flat rate.
6. Paid crew-hours are more important than clock-hours alone
The calculator uses:
Clock time = setup + court service time + closeout + drive time
Then:
Paid crew-hours = clock time × crew size
and
Labor cost = paid crew-hours × loaded labor rate
If a two-person crew spends five clock-hours on a site and route, the business has consumed ten paid crew-hours.
That distinction is critical for sports-facility work that may require multiple workers.
7. Route time and vehicle cost should be modeled separately
Travel consumes worker time and vehicle resources.
The calculator therefore includes both drive minutes and total vehicle miles.
Vehicle cost = vehicle miles × entered vehicle cost per mile
This makes local club work easier to compare with distant private courts or multi-site contracts.
8. Margin is not markup
If a court job costs $700 and you add a 40% markup, the selling price is $980.
The gross margin is only about 28.6%.
For a true 40% gross margin before payment fees:
Price = cost ÷ (1 − 0.40)

9. Contribution per crew-hour helps compare sites
Revenue alone can hide schedule inefficiency.
A $2,000 multi-court job can be weaker than a $1,100 single-court job if it consumes far more paid crew-hours.

Contribution per paid crew-hour = contribution at entered price ÷ paid crew-hours
Use this metric when comparing clubs, schools, HOAs, hotels and private customers.
10. Multi-court pricing should share fixed costs deliberately
When several courts are at one site, setup and route costs can be shared.
That can justify a lower effective price per court while preserving the same target margin.
The discount should come from the actual economics, not an arbitrary percentage.
Save a one-court scenario and a three-court scenario with the same route assumptions. The difference shows how much fixed cost is being spread across the larger site.
11. Minimum job pricing protects one-court visits
A single court still requires a full route and setup cycle.
That makes a minimum service price useful to test.
One practical structure is:
minimum site charge + incremental court amount
The minimum protects travel, setup, closeout and payment costs. The incremental amount reflects added court-level labor and materials.
12. Daily crew capacity should come from paid hours
The calculator estimates:
Daily job capacity = available paid crew-hours per day ÷ paid crew-hours per modeled job
For a two-person crew working an eight-clock-hour day, you might enter 16 paid crew-hours.
If a modeled single-court visit consumes eight paid crew-hours, the simplified capacity is two similar jobs.
This is a planning ceiling, not a scheduling guarantee.
13. Stress-test service time, route time and entered materials
The tennis-court calculator includes three sensitivity cases:
- service time per court +30%,
- drive time +50%,
- entered material cost +30%.
These are financial stress tests, not maintenance instructions.
They reveal whether a quote depends too heavily on perfect productivity or a short route.

But frequency alone does not guarantee lower cost.

A day with three courts at one facility can be operationally different from three single courts across a large region.
The same total court count can consume very different paid crew-hours.
That is why route time belongs in the capacity model, not just the expense report.
