Post-exertional malaise is a clinical picture that belongs in a conversation with a clinician who knows you — bring the printout to that conversation rather than using it in place of one. Why the crash never seems to match the day it came from

People describing post-exertional symptom worsening may report that it is delayed rather than immediate. A dated log can make it easier to discuss the sequence with a clinician, but a temporal pattern in a personal diary cannot establish that one activity caused a later symptom change.

A log fixes this in the least clever way possible: by writing the days down in a row so the eye can do what memory cannot. When activity and symptoms sit on the same chart, a pattern that was invisible while you lived through it one day at a time becomes something you can point at.

What an "envelope" actually means

Pacing approaches are individualized and should not be reduced to a single number from this page. The reference-line box is only a way to separate your own entries visually; it cannot identify a safe activity level or tell you how to change activity.

Worth saying plainly: a rating scale is a blunt instrument. A "6" on a good week and a "6" on a bad one are not the same day, and rating your own exertion is notoriously unreliable when you are unwell. The value is not in any single number, it is in the shape across weeks.

Bringing it to an appointment

"How have you been?" is almost impossible to answer honestly when your recall is being scrambled by the thing you are trying to describe. A printed page with a month of days, the crash days marked, and a note or two about what preceded them turns a vague answer into something a clinician can read in twenty seconds. The same page is often the most useful thing to have when an assessment asks you to describe a typical week — and because it is written as you go, it does not depend on remembering a bad day from six weeks ago.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this log look for a delay instead of same-day symptoms?

Post-exertional malaise (PEM) can be delayed. Symptoms often worsen 12 to 48 hours after activity, so today's energy may not show the full effect of yesterday's exertion. Recording activity and symptoms across several days can help reveal patterns.

Does it need a heart rate monitor or a smartwatch?

You do not need a smartwatch to use this log. Some people and clinicians use heart-rate data as one input for pacing, but the right approach depends on the person and condition. Ask a qualified clinician whether heart-rate monitoring is appropriate for you.

Is anything I type here sent anywhere?

No. Every entry is stored only in this browser on this device. There is no account, no sign-up and no server — which matters, because a symptom log can end up being read in a benefits assessment or an insurance file. Use the export button to keep your own backup copy.
