Pet Cost Calculator
The adoption fee is the smallest number in this whole thing. Food, prevention, insurance, the annual check-up, the groomer, the week in kennels while you are away, and the emergency that has not happened yet — put your own figures in and see the monthly cost, the first year, and what the whole life adds up to. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere; close the tab and it is gone.
Start from a rough example:
Currency
Symbol only — no conversion happens. Enter everything in one currency.
Every month
Food and treats
What you actually spend, not what the bag says it should last.
Flea, tick and worm prevention
Spread the cost — a three-month product divided by three.
Insurance premium
Leave at zero if you are self-insuring, and raise the emergency fund instead.
Litter, bedding, poo bags, toys
The small stuff that never shows up in anyone's estimate.
Every year
Routine vet, vaccines and dental
The annual check-up, boosters, and any ongoing medication reviews.
Grooming
A doodle every six weeks is a serious line item. A short-haired cat is zero.
Boarding, daycare or a dog walker
Holidays, work trips, and the days you cannot get home at lunchtime.
One-off, at the start
Adoption or purchase fee
Shelter fee, breeder price, or zero if they found you.
Neutering, microchip, first vaccines
Often bundled into the adoption fee — check before you double-count it.
Bed, crate, carrier, bowls, lead
Plus the first one they destroy.
Training classes
Puppy class, or the behaviorist you will be very glad you paid for.
The long view
Expected years together
Life expectancy varies hugely by size and breed. Small dogs and cats often reach 14 to 16.
Emergency fund target
One serious night at an emergency clinic. Set it to what would actually cover a bad week.

Whole life, plus the fund
These are your numbers, not national averages. This page adds up what you type and nothing else — it does not know your local vet prices, your breed's health risks, or what insurance will quote you. Use it before you commit to an animal, or once a year as a sense check. It is not financial advice, and it cannot tell you whether you can afford a pet; it can only show you the size of the question.
The number that catches people out
Almost nobody underestimates food. What gets missed is the middle band — grooming every six weeks, the kennel fortnight in August, the dental that the vet has been mentioning for a year — and then the emergency, which is not a budget line at all until it is a four-figure decision made in a waiting room at eleven at night.
That is the honest reason to fill this in before you bring an animal home rather than after. Not to talk yourself out of it. To know which of the three totals is the one you need to plan around, and whether insurance or a savings pot is the better answer for the way your money actually works.
If the total looks frightening
Some of it is negotiable. Grooming at home saves hundreds a year if you are willing to learn. A neighbor who swaps pet-sitting with you removes the boarding line entirely. Buying prevention in three-month packs is usually cheaper per dose than monthly. And adopting an adult animal skips most of the one-off costs, because the neutering, microchip and first vaccines are usually already done.
It depends far more on size, health and where you live than on any national average. A small, healthy dog with no grooming needs and no boarding might run well under a thousand a year, while a large breed with insurance, professional grooming and regular kennel stays can be several times that. The starting figures in this calculator are rough placeholders — replace them with quotes from your own vet, groomer and insurer and the total becomes worth something.
What is the emergency fund line for?
Routine costs are predictable. The costs that force people to give a pet up are not: a swallowed sock, a torn cruciate ligament, a night on fluids. Those bills arrive in one go and often run into the thousands. The calculator sets aside a target so the number is in the plan rather than a surprise, whether you save it or carry insurance instead.
Does this convert between currencies?
No. The currency selector only changes the symbol shown. Enter every figure in the same currency and the totals will be right.
