How Much Stove Fuel Do You Need for Backpacking?

There is no single trustworthy fuel-per-day number for every backpacking stove setup.
A better estimate starts with your own stove, pot and technique: weigh the fuel canister, run a representative boil, then weigh it again. That gives you a measured fuel-per-boil number you can scale to the trip.

Start with a measured boil
Suppose your canister loses 0.28 oz during a normal 16 fl oz boil. If you expect two comparable boils per day, that is roughly 0.56 oz/day before any additional cooking, weather or reserve margin.
The useful part is not the example number. It is the method.
Use the same stove, pot, wind protection and flame setting you normally use. If your trip cooking is mostly simmering rather than boil-and-soak meals, test something representative of that too.
Scale for water volume
A 16 fl oz test should not be treated as identical to heating 24 or 32 fl oz. The relationship is not perfectly linear in real life, but scaling by water volume is a reasonable planning starting point when you do not have a second measured test.

Add margins explicitly
Instead of hiding a safety factor inside the formula, the planner gives you separate fields for:
- simmer or cooking extra;
- cold or wind extra;
- your own reserve percentage.
That makes it obvious whether a large fuel total comes from actual expected use or from conservative margins.
Compare against fuel you already have
If you weigh a partly used canister and know its tare weight, you can estimate remaining fuel. Enter that amount and the planner shows whether the current plan fits inside it.
Do not rely on generic canister full weights when accuracy matters. Brands and canister sizes vary.
Common canister classes are only a comparison
Small, medium and large threaded canisters are often discussed by nominal fuel mass. The planner compares roughly 100 g, 230 g and 450 g classes, but the exact product label wins over the generic class.
A “230 g class” comparison is not a promise that every medium canister contains or weighs exactly the same amount.
What changes stove fuel use most?
The biggest practical variables include wind, cold, pot diameter, flame setting, water temperature, altitude, simmer time and how often the stove is restarted.
That is why a field-measured baseline is more useful than copying a forum answer from someone using a different setup.
